Your article about the causes of addiction was a blessing [MEDICINE, May 5]. I'm a recovering alcoholic and an ex-smoker, and it took me a long time to accept addiction as a physical disease, not a character flaw, and to realize it must be dealt with in the same clinical manner as high blood pressure or cancer.
