THE PRIVATE WORLD OF BILL GATES

Thank you for your superb and insightful story on Microsoft's Bill Gates [BUSINESS, Jan. 13]. I especially liked the way Walter Isaacson prodded Gates to think "philosophically," which he eventually did. Gates really scares me. Society should not allow any one person to amass as much economic power as Gates has. We need some modern-day versions of the old Sherman and Clayton antitrust laws to regulate computer commerce. We need, too, to stop worshipping at the altar of high technology. It has only instrumental value and needs to be judged by how efficiently it promotes...
