American Playhouse, acclaimed for its dramas on PBS, has changed its emphasis to making films for theatrical release. Already, 40 of its 185 productions have first played in theaters (e.g., Longtime Companion, Smooth Talk), and that number will rapidly increase: Playhouse plans 15 films over the next three years. PBS has broadcast rights.
