Clinton's European Adventure

On his first European trip in office, President Clinton delivered a well- received speech in Brussels in which he stressed U.S. commitment to Europe and pledged to keep 100,000 troops there. Brussels was the site of a two-day nato summit, and the alliance agreed to Clinton's Partnership for Peace plan. The initiative provides for the possibility of former Warsaw Pact countries' joining NATO gradually over an unspecified period.
