For the past decade, she has focused her energy and camera on the intimate brutalities that shatter the lives of so many American women and children. Says senior editor Nancy Gibbs, who wrote this week's cover story: "It may be that her wrenching photographs have done more to raise awareness than any legal or political debate ever could."
