When the chairman of the Phillips Exeter Academy drama department was arrested and convicted of possessing and distributing child pornography last fall, officials of the New Hampshire prep school assured worried parents that no students appeared in the confiscated materials. But court documents released last week showed otherwise: the teacher, Larry Lane Bateman, had surreptitiously videotaped undressed students in a campus dormitory and assigned other students in his charge to make sexually explicit tapes of themselves, which he kept. Bateman, 51, is to be sentenced this week.
