For more than a century, the Custer Battlefield National Monument in southeastern Montana has served as a memorial to the "Last Stand," in which Lieut. Colonel George Armstrong Custer and more than 250 men of the 7th U.S. Cavalry met their death in a fierce battle with Sioux and Cheyenne warriors on June 25, 1876. Last week Congress approved a bill to rename the park the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.
