Boeing launched its new 777 jet with a supersonic deal last week when United Airlines became the first customer for the advanced twin-engine plane. In the largest purchase of commercial aircraft ever, United placed $22 billion worth of orders and options on 128 Boeing jets, including 68 777s. The deal will enable Boeing to mount full-scale production of its first new jetliner since it began selling its 757 and 767 models in 1978.

The 777 will seat some 360 passengers and will have an extra-wide wingspan to give it a 4,800-mile range. The new jet will have optional fold-up wing tips...
