Potter Stewart, 70, former U.S. Supreme Court Justice (1958-1981) who became the crucial "swing man" in the Warren Court era (1953-69) and remained a careful centrist who avoided sweeping principles and ideological stances; after a stroke; in Hanover, N.H. He balanced general support for civil rights with opposition to affirmativeaction programs, belief in a vigorous press with a dislike of pornography. In his most famous opinion, he said in 1964 that he could not define such hard-core material, "but I know it when I see it."
