Two aggressive newspaper chains last week announced plans for one of the largest mergers ever. If the deal is approved by stockholders and government agencies, the Knight Newspapers, with 16 dailies in the Midwest, East and South, will soon join forces with Ridder Publications, which owns 19 dailies and eight weeklies mostly in the West.
