Flaring through parched timberland in the drought-stricken Pacific Northwest last week, the worst forest fires in more than half a century defied efforts to contain them. So far this year, some 1,800 fires have destroyed more than 105,000 acres of timber in Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Fire-fighting costs have climbed to $17 million; damage to the economy of Oregon alone is estimated at $5,000,000 a day.
