Labor: The Difference That Sex Makes

Now that the husband of Businesswoman Lady Bird Johnson has promised to seek out more women for federal jobs, the spotlight has been focused on a force in the U.S. economy that is growing in numbers and importance: women workers. One in every three U.S. women works—half again as many as 15 years ago—and one in every three workers is a woman. The number of women in the labor force, which stands at 25 million, is growing by 2.5% a year, compared with a 1.4% gain for men. Last week several steps were afoot to open still more jobs...
