THE Paris school of painting boasts five aged masters who probably have less in common than the members of any other "school" in art history. They are protean Pablo Picasso, bubbly Henri Matisse, smoldering Georges Rouault, sherbet-cool Georges Braqueand the least famous of the lot, Fernand Léger. The U.S. is getting to know Léger better this year, through a retrospective exhibition of his work arranged by Chicago's Art Institute. Last week, after a six-week stay in Chicago, the 125-item show opened at the San Francisco Museum of Art. Manhattan's Museum of Modern Art will have it in the fall.
