CANADA: Campaign Kickoff

Canada's national election, its first since 1949, will be held Aug. 10. Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent set the date last week within 48 hours after his return from the coronation, giving the signal for active campaigning to begin this week.

With the country enjoying record prosperity and 71-year-old Liberal Leader St. Laurent at the crest of his personal popularity, the incumbent Liberal Party is an odds-on choice to win its fifth straight election since 1935.
