BATTLE OF KOREA: Costly Week

All through the night, Chinese mortars and artillery pounded a 20-mile chain of tiny outposts. Before dawn the Chinese hit, and hit hard. Grim ROK troops fought off the Chinese at the foot of one hill, but retreated from four others. A few hours later, the ROKs gamely stormed back, recaptured two of the fallen hills.

Next night the Reds shifted their attention to half a dozen outposts not far from Panmunjom. Vegas, Carson and Elko hills fell to the Communists. U.N. losses were high, but far below the Chinese.
