The U.S. Armory and Arsenal at Springfield, Mass, retired an old civil service employee who had spent the past 34 years there working on rifles. At a testimonial dinner, shy, Canadian-born John C. Garand, 65, inventor of the Army's basic M-1 (Garand) rifle, was given, as a farewell trophy, the millionth M-1 which was made during World War II (over 4,000,000 have been made for the Army). Said Gunsmith Garand, looking at his famous product: "I've never felt bad about designing the rifle even though its only real use is in war....
