VETERANS The Grab In the Senate last week, no Senator rose to defend the President's veto of the disabled veterans' pension bill. The special handiwork of Mississippi's John Rankin and the powerful veterans' lobby, the bill gives $120 each month to crippled ex-G.I.s whose disabilities are in no way connected with their military service (TIME, Aug. 27). The House had already overridden the veto by an overwhelming margin. The Senate promptly followed suit, 69 to 9.*

*The unintimidated nine: Democrats Byrd (Va.) Douglas (ILL.), Ellender (La.), Fulbright (Ark.), Gillette (Iowa), O'Mahoney (Wyo.) and Robertson (Va.); Republicans Duff (Pa.) and Ferguson (Mich.).
