Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery of Alamein last week chose this defense for a necessary reduction of German food rations in the British zone to a near-starvation 1,000 calories a day: "Germans gave the inmates of Beisen only 800 calories." Short, spare Montgomery added: "Big, overgrown Germans have got to tighten their belts."
