In Washington, Turner's dance arena rocked to the music of Duke Ellington. White Musician Josana Quantian stepped up to the ticket window. The cashier tossed his money back. The arena had been reserved that night for Negroes only.

Quantian let it pass. But not earnest Tomlinson D. Todd, Negro president of Washington's Institute on Race Relations. Said he next day: "Quantian was refused admission because he is white. Discrimination in the nation's capital must go."
