Education: Bigger & Bigger

U.S. education was suffering last week from a surfeit of numbers.

Enrollment in public schools hit a record 24,209,796 this fall, the National Education Association reported. War babies have swollen the schools by half a million.

Enrollment in the nation's 1,753 colleges and universities jumped to an all-time top of 2,338,226, the Office of Education reported.

For the first time since the war, veterans are less than a majority (48%). The Office of Education's Big Five: New York University (46,000*), University of California (43,000), Columbia University (31,000), University of Minnesota (28,000), University of Illinois (26,000).
