FRANCE: Between Generals

To the Allies, moving slowly toward unanimous recognition of the Committee of Liberation at Algiers, the French last week made plain their own unity. Wrote Henri Giraud to Charles de Gaulle:

Mon Général,

There are no longer two armies; there is the French Army. You have recognized me as commander. For this I thank you. . . .

Together we shall discover that we have never ceased to be true soldiers of France. I ask that your followers keep their admiration and affection for you but that they accord me . . . confidence and devotion. . . .
