U.S. At War: No Dingledangle

Congress adjourned last week, too obsessed with its own re-election problems to do anything about creating a new five-star rank for U.S. admirals and generals (TIME, Sept. 25). Typical beside-the-point remarks:

¶ Missouri's Dewey Short: "It seems to me it renders rank commonplace. We set up a five-star general and they [the British] will create a super-dooper field marshal."

¶ Illinois' Ralph Church: "I don't like this proposition of dangling new ranks around. We ought to get the truth of Pearl Harbor first."
