FOREIGN TRADE: Export Overbalance

The swelling flow of U.S. war goods moving overseas pushed the value of U.S. exports in March to $930 million, the highest ever recorded in one month and more than triple the 1938 monthly aver age. Of this vast sum, Lend-Lease took $688 million. But imports, although double prewar 1938, were valued at only $243 million. This prodigious unbalance in U.S. foreign trade was a grisly index of the dreadful cost of war in terms of real wealth.
