ASSIGNMENTS: To Duty

Outstanding among last week's assignments to duty were the following:

Made commander in chief of United Nations operations in Northern Africa, Lieut. General Dwight David Eisenhower (see p. 25).

Commanding U.S. air forces in the African expedition, Brigadier General James Harold Doolittle.

Commanding U.S. ground troops: on Africa's west coast, Major General George Smith Patton Jr., former commander of the First Armored Corps; at Oran, Major General Lloyd R. Fredendall; at Algiers, Major General Charles W. Ryder (see p. 26).

Commanding U.S. Naval forces in the African expedition, Rear Admiral Henry Kent Hewitt.

Put in command of U.S. forces in the Middle East, Lieut....
