Month ago, handsome John Daniel Miller Hamilton left the office of Pennsylvania's Republican Boss Joseph Newton Pew Jr. to feel the GOPulse in the Middle and Far West (TIME, Nov. 15). Real purpose of the trip: to line up native-son candidacies with which to stop Wendell Willkie in the 1944 convention.
On his way home last week, and ready to report back to Boss Pew, John Hamilton stopped off in Indianapolis. He had apparently forgotten about native sons. To Indiana GOPoliticos he said, in effect: Get behind Tom Dewey for 1944. His statement to reporters was, significantly: "No man would turn down...
