South Carolina's unreconstructed House of Representatives last week was still fighting the War Between the States. The House resolved:
"Whereas, the stench of scalawag and carpetbagger days is too strong and fresh in our recollection to now retrace our steps in that racial direction . . . we indignantly and vehemently denounce . . . all organizations seeking . . . comingling of the (white and Negro) races upon any basis of equality as un-American . . . and solemnly pledge our lives to maintaining (white supremacy) whatever the cost. We demand that...
