In Britain the BBC celebrated his birthday with a German broadcast of his 1937 New Year's sermon on Germany's "de-Christianization" by "the forces of evil who despotically govern us." In the U.S. fellow German Thomas Mann paid tribute: "Here is a man who went his way to the cross with full awareness of the terror of the way."
