Lamplighters went out of fashion when electricity came in. Last week members of the American Physical Society, meeting in Chicago, heard Professor Charles Tobias Knipp describe a new kind of electric light which may bring lamplighters back, set them to lighting lamps with electricity once every six months. Professor Knipp had made a flask of pyrex glass of 22-litre capacity, with a stem two metres long and 70 millimetres in diameter.
