CHINA: Chaos

To the confusion of highly paid special correspondents, the Chinese situation last week resisted all efforts at disentanglement. Super-Tuchun Chang, who has lorded it for several years in Manchuria, was evidently hard pressed by his revolted subordinate, General Küo (TIME, Dec. 7). But opinions differed as to whether he was making a last stand near Mukden, his capital, or had fled to Japan accompanied by his Occidental adviser, "General" Frank Sutton, famed British adventurer (TIME, Nov. 23).
