In Washington and New York last week, as in most other U. S. communities, heat and humidity rose to stultifying degrees. People died. Those who lived gasped and tried divers means of relief. In Washington the Government offices closed. In Manhattan, the New York Central closed down its general offices so that clerks could hunt coolish neighborhoods.
