It is an infernal place of Gila monsters, scorching earth, mesquite and giant cactus. For centuries, the section of southern Arizona now designated as the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument has been crossed by people risking death in hope of finding a better life: Spanish explorers, missionaries, men drawn by California gold. They come now, still seeking the golden dream, from Mexico and Central America, an illegal but relentless stream.
