Contributor John Skow, who wrote this week's cover story, regards popcorn and Paul Newman as inseparable, twin treasures of the moviehouse. Skow was nonetheless surprised to find himself sitting in an office of Newman's Salad King Inc. as the actor blithely demonstrated his definitive technique for buttering popcorn. Recalls Skow: "He wielded his knife at a precisely calculated angle, wriggled it meticulously while splashing droplets of butter on everything in sight, and then invited me to try it."
