Suddenly, savagely, street violence and rioting erupted last week throughout the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. Arab youths threw stones at Israeli soldiers, who responded with rifle fire and tear gas. Roadways were blocked by burning tires and other rubble. City streets emptied, except for the occasional patrol of red-bereted Israeli paratroopers.
