Precisely at the moment when the 1 p.m. prison whistle sounded, a convict limped into the third-floor library brandishing a .38-cal. pistol. "Get out of here," he shouted at other prisoners, as he ordered them down the ramp from the library. When two guards tried to come up the ramp, the convict fired at them, hitting one in the foot.
