Born to Win is a problem picture about The Problem (dope). It is also about more than that—which is where other problems enter in. With them come some social commentary, some of the aspects of a conventional thriller, some comedy, some rueful drama. Trouble is, all the parts never completely fit together.

George Segal is an ex-hairdresser called J., a facile and funny junkie who likes to say "I'm not addicted, I'm habituated." He roams around Manhattan's West Side scraping up money for fixes and getting into trouble. The cops hassle him. The neighborhood pusher cons him into running sinister little missions...
