The Nation: Seesaw Polls

Edmund Muskie was relieved of the problems of the front-runner—at least temporarily. The latest Gallup poll showed Edward Kennedy ahead of him, 26% to 22%, as the presidential choice of Democrats. Muskie aides said their candidate had not yet begun to fight in August, when the poll was taken. Since then, he has made a splash with his statements on busing and a black Vice President. For better or worse, that will be reflected in the next poll.
