RUSSIA has some of the world's most beautiful and unusual churches, but they have mostly remained hidden from the eyes of foreigners. Many of them are outside the big cities to which travelers from abroad were restricted during the long period of Stalinism and the Iron Curtain. Now, however, with Moscow actively courting tourists and their hard currencies, the officially atheistic Communists are not only allowing access to the churches but have actually begun promoting them.
