Screening off unsightly slum areas, Sukarno laced Djakarta's avenues with flags and festive arches, assigned each of the 35 Afro-Asian emissaries—from Chou En-lai to Imperial Princess Ashraf of Iran—his own personal motorcade, complete with screaming sirens.
