Nation: THE RACES FOR GOVERNOR

OF the 25 states holding gubernatorial elections this year, 18 now have Democratic incumbents, seven Republicans. Although most of the campaigns are being fought strictly on state issues, the results of the presidential contest nonetheless seem almost certain to make the difference in a number of states where the races are remarkably close.
