Church membership in the U.S. reached a record 100,162,529 in 1955a gain of 2,679,918 over the previous yearaccording to the Yearbook of American Churches. Thus 60.9% of U.S. citizens are now affiliated with religious bodies as compared with 57% in 1950, 36% in 1900. Denominational breakdown: 58,448,567 Protestants, 33,396,647 Roman Catholics, 5,500,000 Jews, 2.386,945 Eastern Orthodox, 367,370 Old Catholics and Polish National Catholics, and 63,000 Buddhists.
