Major General William Frische Dean drove the 44th Division hard through Mannheim and Weinheim; then, swinging south toward Austria, the 44th took Lorch, Ulm (where Napoleon had routed 50,000 Austrians), Memmingen and Kempten, and cleared the Fern Pass.
