Major General William Frische Dean drove the 44th Division hard through Mannheim and Weinheim; then, swinging south toward Austria, the 44th took Lorch, Ulm (where Napoleon had routed 50,000 Austrians), Memmingen and Kempten, and cleared the Fern Pass. Obviously, the war was in its last phase, but strapping Bill Dean would not relax. He called in his regimental commanders and told them: "Our business is fighting.
