Education: Report Card

¶A year and a half after it appointed him, Harvard University announced last week that Ralph J. Bunche had resigned as professor of government. Reason: Bunche's U.N. duties as director of the trusteeship department had kept him from ever filling his Harvard post, and he did not know when he could get around to the lecture room.

¶Degree of the week (announced by Indiana University): a Master of Arts in literary criticism.

¶Gift of the week: $5,000,000 to Yale University from the Old Dominion Foundation, founded by Paul Mellon, '29, son of the late Secretary of the Treasury, Andrew W. Mellon.
