To find out what life was like inside a Long Island jail, Newsday Reporter Don Kellerman, 25, tried a riskybut suremethod of getting firsthand information. He got himself arrested on a burglary charge (TIME, Nov. 3), and while in jail gathered material for a Newsday series which touched off an investigation of the Suffolk County jail and brought Kellerman the "Distinguished Service Award" of the New York Bar Association.
