Minneapolis schools were shut up tight by a janitors' strike last week. If it hadn't been for a man named John Ford, promotion manager of station WTCN-TV there might have been no school in Minneapolis at all.
Ford hit on the idea of putting impromptu lessons on TV. He set up desks, a blackboard, maps and globes in his studio, rounded up half a dozen teachers. From 9 a.m. to 11, he had storytelling for the first-grade level, deeper stuff (geography, science) for older children. Just how many Minneapolis youngsters were tuning in Ford couldn't be sure, but he planned to carry...
