Religion: Fasting & Prayer

U.S. Protestant women are urged to go without food on Friday, Feb. 9. The newly formed National Council of Churches (TIME, Dec. 11), urging observance of the first Friday of Lent as a 24-hour period of fasting, said that "physical hunger can help us to understand the people of the world who are hungry and suffering through no choice of their own."

The council, through its women's department, also asked each woman "to continue in prayer [for peace]..."
