Novelist John (Grapes of Wrath) Steinbeck, the Reds' favorite U.S. proletarian novelist even after the cold war began, is now an outspoken antiCommunist. Last week, in Italy on assignment from Collier's, Steinbeck heard a haunting voice from his past.
