The book reviews generally assume that New York Herald Tribune readers are a sophisticated lot of intellectuals. Book publishers seem to know better. Among the full page ads in the Trib's Sunday book section this week:

¶ "This book takes off the Pounds and the Bulges."
¶ "Have you a 'NERVOUS STOMACH? . . . 49 revealing chapters."
