National Affairs: Work Done

Last week the House:

¶ Passed a bill to transfer small naval craft to China (to help it establish and train a Navy).

¶ Passed authorization for $250,000,000 more to convert wartime housing to veterans' needs(the total is now $410,000,000).

¶ Passed a bill extending to March 31, 1947 some provisions of the Second War Powers Act (rationing, allocation, priorities, etc.).

¶ Passed legislation canceling $7,194,682,459 in unspent war funds.

The Senate:

¶ Did a rush job of passing a House approved bill authorizing presidential nomination of Lieut. General Walter Bedell Smith as Ambassador to Moscow without affecting his military status...
