Religion: In Texas

If Texans had a state religion, it would probably be Baptist. Of Texas' 11,000-odd churches, 3,300 are Baptist (total membership: nearly a million). In Amarillo last week, at the state's Baptist General Convention, Executive Secretary Howard Williams reminded his brethren of the obligations that go with power. Said he: "Texas Baptists have grown to a mighty people. We must not be unmindful of the tremendous responsibility which goes with such strength. More than any other group of Christians, the general conditions in Texas, both good and evil, can be laid at the door of the Baptists of Texas."
