To replace aging Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz as Chief of Naval Operations, President Truman last week picked Admiral Louis E. Denfeld, 56, commander of the Pacific Fleet. A onetime chief of naval personnel, Denfeld was a proved administrator, well-liked on Capitol Hill, but no airman. It was a clear-cut victory for the Navy's tightly knit battleship clique.
